Muslims for Progressive Values MPV Ummah Canada Urges PMO to Retract Statement it made against Not for Profit NCCM in Response to Criticism of PMO by NCCM.
For Immediate Release.
OTTAWA, Canada. January 28th, 2014 — At Muslims for Progressive Values MPV Ummah Canada, pursuant to our guiding principles, we speak out against laws and policies anywhere in the world, both abroad in the Muslim world, here at home in Canada and elsewhere, that result or may result, in the oppression of people due to faith, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, economic circumstances and/or other circumstances.
It has been reported that the Office of our Prime Minister, Stephen Harper (PMO) received criticism by way of letter, dated January 14th, 2014, from the not for profit Canadian organization, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) prior to Prime Minister Harper’s recent trip to Israel.
In its criticism, it is reported that NCCM expressed concern that Prime Minister Harper’s delegation to Israel, included a member, who openly supported an organization, that consistently appeared to incite hatred against Muslim communities.
In response to the criticism, the PMO’s public reply to Sun News, through its representative, Jason MacDonald, included the comment: “We will not take seriously criticism from an organization with documented ties to a terrorist organization such as Hamas”.
We are disturbed that the PMO appeared to make such a heinous allegation against a Canadian not for profit, for the purpose of opposing criticism leveled against it.
We are concerned that such a method, on the part of the PMO, of opposing and responding to criticism by citizens and groups of citizens, who express dissent against the PMO, stifles freedom of expression and freedom of conscience in Canada.
We are concerned that such a method, on the part of the PMO, of opposing and responding to criticism may be a breach of our democracy and may intimidate those who wish to the express dissent against our government and/or any other government.
We urge the PMO to retract its statement, that our Prime Minister insist it do so, and that our Prime Minister and the PMO show Canadians that our nation remains a place where our leaders do not fear criticism and they will continue to honor Canada’s reputation as a nation built on a foundation of freedom and tolerance.
